Shittaung Paya (Shite-Thaung), Mrauk U, Myanmar

Shitthaung Temple: King Min Ba Kyi built Shitthaung Temple in 1535, Eighty thousand relics have been enshrined into the relics chamber. So this temple is called Eighty thousand images. The temple was built to commemorate the victory over the twelve provinces of Bengal and Portuguese marauders, also called the “Temple of Victory” (Ran Aung Zeya). There are five passages around the images house. The wall of the outer gallery is made of huge block stones and the five hundred and fifty previous existences of Buddha’s life are carved.

It’s a frenzy of Buddhas in various sizes! I found it mesmerizing and simply fascinating!! Thick walls with windows and nooks surround the two-tiered structure, which has been reconstructed over the centuries. Enjoy exploring this amazing temple! I did, twice 🙂

Side-Note: Temples names are spelled many different ways, like: Shite-Thaung, Shittaung, Shitthaung, etc. You will find this all over Myanmar, especially Mrauk U.

Getting to Shitthaung Temple

Getting here anywhere in Mrauk U is easy, any tuk tuk driver can take you. You will most likely hire a tuk tuk driver for the day. At the Shitthaung Temple, there are many, many other temples and random, unnamed stupas to look at. It would be a possibility to just hire a tuk tuk to take you here and you could spend the whole day in this area, go watch the sunset, and then just grab a tuk tuk home after that.

The cost to enter Shittaung Temple

There is one fee for the entire Mrauk U Archaeological Zone, which costs 5,000 Kyat ($3.71 USD) and we purchased our tickets right before we went into the prayer hall of Shittaung. Make sure you keep the ticket stub with you at all times, in case you are asked when you’re at other temples, which we were not.
